Toril police precinct chief Alden Bacarra Delvo said they were tipped off about a plan to rob the Mercury Drug at Crossing Bayabas in Toril on Monday morning, and so they set off to watch over the area.

At around 9:15 a.m., a white Kia Avella arrived in the drugstore parking area with five men on board.

Delvo said two went in while the three remained outside.

The two men, however, backtracked upon seeing policemen inside the drugstore. As the police closed in on them, the five men started firing and a shootout ensued. This left three of the five dead and policemen Norman Cano with a bullet wound on his left leg.

Recovered from the shootout scene and from inside the car were five empty shells of a 5.56 caliber, seven homemade caliber .38 revolvers with 22 live ammunition, two caliber .45 pistols with two magazines and 13 live ammunition, and an improvised semi-automatic machine gun with one magazine and live ammunition.

One of the slain men was identified as a certain Eduardo Mondijar Arado, said to be a resident of Ma-a, Davao City and the owner of the Kia Avella car. The other slain suspect was Justo Penaranda of Carmen, Davao del Norte, while the third one remains unidentified.

The police are now pursuing the two others who were able to flee from police. (With BOT of Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
