US welcomes newly signed RP anti-terror law
By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The United States government welcomes the signing on Tuesday of the Human Security Act of 2007 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

At the same time, the US government congratulated the Philippine government and Congress "for this positive step forward in countering and preventing terrorism in the Philippines."

"This new law will help provide Philippine law enforcement and judicial authorities with the legal tools they need to confront the threats posed by international terrorism, while ensuring protection of civil liberties and human rights," a statement released by the US embassy, a copy of which reached Sun.Star Zamboanga, said.

It said the US will continue to work with the Philippines as a partner and ally in the war on terrorism, providing technical assistance, training, and sharing information with Philippine counterparts.

The Human Security Act of 2007 criminalizes terrorism and condemns it as inimical to the country's national security and people's welfare.

Malacañang believes that the law will further stabilize conditions nationwide to bolster the country's bid to attract more job-generating investments. (Sunnex)
