Moderate earthquake jolts northern Japan (4:12 p.m.)
TOKYO -- A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 shook northern Japan Sunday, but there was no danger of tsunami, the Meteorological Agency said.
The 4:09 p.m. (0709 GMT) quake was centered off the eastern coast of Japan's main northern island of Hokkaido at a depth of about 30 kilometers (19 miles) under the ocean floor, the agency said in a statement. There were no danger of a tsunami, it said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Hokkaido is about 829 kilometers (518 miles) northwest of Tokyo.
