Pinoys still opt for opposition bets: survey

MANILA -- Filipinos continue to favor the opposition by choosing six Genuine Opposition (GO) bets, four from Team Unity, and two independents among the senatorial bets they will vote for if elections were held today, a survey said.

The February 28 to March 5 Pulse Asia survey, which had 1,200 respondents, showed GO candidate Loren Legarda leading the pack of senatorial hopefuls with 56.8 percent of votes.

"I am very happy and I take this survey result as an affirmation from the people for me to continue what I have been doing," said Legarda. "But I'll do better than what's expected of me if I'm elected anew to the Senate for I have not and will never let the Filipino people down."

She was followed by Panfilo Lacson (GO) with 41.1 percent, Francis Pangilinan (Independent) with 39.4 percent, Francis Escudero (GO) with 35.5 percent, Ralph Recto (Team Unity) with 35.2 percent, and Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. (GO) with 35 percent.

Completing the top 12 are: Joker Arroyo (Team Unity), 34.5 percent; Benigno Aquino III (GO), 34.2 percent; Edgardo Angara (Team Unity), 32.1 percent; Alan Peter Cayetano (GO), 30.9 percent; Gregorio Honasan (Independent), 27.3 percent; and Vicente Sotto III (Team Unity), 25.4 percent.

The number one elected senator in 1998 with over 15 million votes, Legarda, has a 15.7-point spread over Lacson and a 17.4-point margin over Pangilinan.

"To say that I'm overwhelmed by this survey result is an understatement. This will inspire me further to reach out to as many of our kababayans, as what is physically possible, with what's left of the campaign period," Legarda said.

Statistically still having a chance are: Aquilino Pimentel III (GO), 23.1 percent; Vicente Magsaysay (Team Unity) and Sonia Roco (GO), both 22.4 percent; John Osmeña (GO), 21.9 percent; Michael Defensor (Team Unity), 21.3 percent; and Juan Miguel Zubiri (Team Unity), 19.2 percent.

Actor Cesar Montano (Team Unity) had 15.1 percent of votes, Anna Dominique Coseteng (GO) 13.9 percent, Prospero Pichay 13.7 percent, Richard Gomez 13.1 percent, Antonio Trillanes IV 9.9 percent and Teresa Oreta 9.1 percent.

Team Unity's Luis Singson had 6.5 percent and Jamalul Kiram had 2.5 percent.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the survey actually showed an improvement in the performance of administration bets.

He said the score was 9-3 or 8 to 4 in the past two weeks in favor of the opposition.

"We still have more than two months of campaign to go. We will get the majority for the administration," he said.

Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo said the impact of the television advertisements on the image and rating of the candidates are starting to show.

He noted that Pichay previously had an awareness rating of 25 to 40 percent but now it has jumped to 85 percent.

Saludo said the ratings of the administration bets are expected to rise once the campaigns for the local posts kick in on March 30 because the local candidates from the administration, who make up more than 90 percent of local officials, will carry the Team Unity.

Loren also topped the January 25-29 Pulse Asia survey with her 46.6 percent giving her a 12-point spread over Lacson then.

She also topped a Malacañang-commissioned senatorial survey held from February 24 to 27 with 1,500 respondents from 300 barangays nationwide.

Pulse Asia said with around two months to go before the May 2007 elections, Filipino registered voters are naming an average of seven out of 12 individuals as their bets to the Senate.

On the other hand, 10.6 percent of Filipino registered voters are either still undecided as regards their senatorial candidates or refuse to name their senatorial preferences at this time. (Sunnex)
