Comelec approves 37 bets for senators in May polls
MANILA -- Thirty-seven senatorial candidates made it to the official list the Commission on Elections (Comelec) approved Friday.

Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos said the list of 37 candidates, including the namesake of Genuine Opposition bet and Taguig-Pateros Representative Alan Peter Cayetano, was approved by the commission en banc.
Abalos said the commission approved the candidacy of Kilusang Bagong Lipunan senatorial bet Joselito “Peter” Cayetano after he was vouched for by Vic Millora, nominee for KBL president.
However, Joselito can still be removed from the final list if Comelec decides to grant a petition for disqualification filed by the Taguig-Pateros congressman against the KBL bet.
The Comelec received 80 certificates of candidacy for senators as it closed its doors for nominations on February 12.
The number of senatorial candidates was reduced to 42 as the commission ordered them to face the en banc and present evidence why they should not be considered nuisance candidates.
In a related development, Comelec dropped gay rights group Ang Ladlad from the list of official party-list candidates after the group failed to prove a nationwide membership.
The Comelec’s Second Division, headed by Commissioner Florentino Tuason, earlier denied Ang Ladlad’s application for accreditation as a party-list group “for lack of merit.” (Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Zamboanga.
