CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano Monday called for a full-blown investigation on the "senseless and barbaric" murder of a fourth year law student.

Emano said he is deeply saddened by the killing of Xavier University (XU) College of Law fourth year student Tamtam Edpan.

The incident, he added, hurts his efforts to unify the Muslims, Christians, and Lumads (tribes people) in the city.

Governor Moreno, who served as a professor in XU-Law, said Edpan was one of his students in Secured Transactions last school year.

"I gave him a good grade. I condemned in the strongest possible terms the senseless and barbaric killing of a very decent promising young man," he said.

He urged police to "leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators of this dastardly act to justice."

The Provincial Board of Misamis Oriental and the City Council of Cagayan de Oro passed separate resolutions Monday strongly condemning the brutal murder of Edpan, a member of the Vocis Atenae and Fraternitas Scintilla Legis.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Director Aurelio Trampe will be invited to the City Council session next Monday so he could provide members with updates on the police investigation.

The regional office of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) did an autopsy Monday on Edpan's body.

Edpan sustained injuries and three gunshot wounds.

XU president Jose Ramon Villarin and XU-Law dean Raul Villanueva, together with various XU-Law student organizations, met Monday to form the Justice for Tamtam Movement.

The group will be mapping out various activities to keep the probe on Edpan's death going and to push authorities to exert all efforts in ensuring the arrest of the law student's killers.

The NBI in Northern Mindanao said it received reports tagging a group of Maranaos as behind the kidnapping of Edpan last Thursday evening and the theft of his Tunda Green Mitsubishi Adventure.

Edpan was found dead at a remote area in Barangay Sigayan, Taraka, Lanao del Sur last Saturday. His vehicle was nowhere to be found.

Reports showed that the rate of car thefts in the city tended to soar especially during election season. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
