Clans, Garcillano spark Bukidnon poll race By Maria Aserios
BUKIDNON -- Historical political battles are in the offing in this province with clans clashing and a controversial ex-Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner making a bid for Congress.
At the provincial level alone, political kingpin Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri Jr., who is seeking reelection, will face long-time political rival JR Nereus Acosta, who has served for three terms as first district representative.

Many predict a hard and heavy face-off between the two, following a heated exchange and allegations of corruption leveled by Zubiri on Acosta.
Zubiri's and Acosta's families are also set to establish a political bloc of sorts as other members of their families are also running in this year's elections.
Zubiri's son, Juan Miguel "Migz," is a senatorial candidate while his other son Joey will gun for a third district seat. His nephew Ignacio "Inaki" will seek reelection as vice mayor of this province's capital Malaybalay City.
For his part, Acosta will have his sister Malou face ex-Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano in the race for the first district congressional seat. His mother Socorro "Coring" Acosta will seek reelection as Manolo Fortich mayor.
Joining the race for the first congressional district will be Zubiri-backed Candido Ben Pancrudo of Lakas-CMD.
Even with flak from various quarters, Garcillano still caused quite a stir during his filing of candidacy Wednesday when he arrived with supporters and three members of the sexy girl group Viva Hot Babes in tow.
Garcillano also said he will make use of the now infamous phrase "Hello Garci" to his advantage. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Zamboanga. (March 31, 2007 issue) Write letter to the editor. Click here. Join the Sun.Star message board. Click here. |
