Gubernatorial bets fight on rally venue
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO CITY -- Two women gubernatorial candidates of Davao Oriental are not just fighting over the governorship, but also on the venue of their proclamation rally both scheduled last Friday.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

Representative Corazon Malanyaon and incumbent Governor Ma Elena Palma Gil both chose the Mati Baywalk area as the site of their proclamation rally Friday evening. Both had set up their stages just a few meters away from each other.

Malanyaon said it was them who first set up a stage in Mati Baywalk and Gil's camp just came in later.

Malanyaon added that they have also secured a mayor's permit for the use of the baywalk area that day while the Gils have not.

In a telephone interview, Malanyaon said the incident is a clear form of harassment.

She said this is not the first incident that the governor's camp harassed her and definitely would not be the last.

She said they have decided to move their proclamation rally at a later date so as to avoid any untoward incident from happening if ever they push through with their scheduled rally last Friday evening.

"We have to stop our rally because pinaharap nila ang kanilang malakas na speaker sa stage namin (the sound boxes were positioned towards our stage). But the people sympathized with us. I think she lost the votes," Malanyaon said.

Sun.Star tried getting the reaction of Gil but in vain.

Gil and Malanyaon are relatives and former political allies. Malanyaon is with Kampi while Gil is with Lakas-CMD. Both are administration candidates.

Malanyaon said she decided to run against Gil due to the clamor of the people of Davao Oriental for a new and better leader.(Sun.Star Davao)
