Town mayor wants probe on attack at his house
By Bong Garcia

BUUG, Zamboanga del Sur -- Dimataling Town Mayor Haniel Baya ordered a thorough investigation into the attack on his home that killed his worker Sunday evening.

Baya said the police must take full control of the situation and determine the persons or group responsible for the shooting to death of his truck man at his residence in Barangay Tingabolong.

Heavily armed men attacked Baya's home in the town Dimataling, 45 kilometers west of Pagadian City, the provincial capital of Zamboanga del Sur Province, authorities said.

The police said unidentified gunmen opened fire at the house of Mayor Baya about 9:30 p.m.

Mayor Baya was unhurt, but his truck man was killed in the attack. The victim's identity was not immediately available.

Police are still trying to determine the motive in the attack but did not discount the possibility that the incident was election-related, citing that the town was listed as among the Commission on Elections' areas of concern.

The town was also considered as being infiltrated by New People's Army (NPA) guerillas operating in the Baganian peninsula.

Baya, who is seeking reelection under the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), was a government militia leader before he joined politics. (Sunnex)
