Arroyo wants 10% addt'l hike in privileges for social security members (10:19 a.m.)
MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has asked the board of directors of the Social Security System (SSS) to grant its members another 10 percent increase in benefits this year as part of government’s social payback for its improved fiscal position.
Arroyo, during the second national convention of account officers of SSS and the 50th anniversary of the institution, said the increase would be a fitting addition to the 10 percent hike in pensions given last September to more than a million members.
“My request to our board is maybe let's gift the Filipino people with another 10 percent increase in benefits this year. This is social payback,” she said.
The President also told the account officers of SSS to focus on broadening the coverage of the institution to include the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs),
self-employed workers, micro-enterprises, and those who belong to the underground economy. (JMR) |
