KORONADAL CITY -- A delegation official from Marinduque Province succumbed to heart failure while nine other athletes and officials suffered from heat stroke after temperature soared to a high 38 degrees Celsius during the opening day of the Palarong Pambansa Sunday.

Dr. Conrado Braña, South Cotabato provincial hospital chief, said Carlos Mingi, a school principal from Mogpog in Marinduque, died at around 7 p.m. Sunday reportedly due to complications related to a lingering heart problem.

He said the 59-year-old Mingi, one of the delegation officers of Region 4-B, was brought to the provincial hospital at around 11 a.m. following a heart attack.

"He is already suffering from heart disease and that kind of illness may be worsened by the soaring temperature or due to strenuous activities," he said.

Another delegation officer, Pelino Sawag of Pampanga, was also rushed to the provincial hospital at around 3:45 p.m. Sunday when he collapsed right after the opening day parade.

The 30-year-old Sawag, who suffered from hypertension, was briefly admitted at the hospital's emergency room but was released several hours later when his condition stabilized.

The Palaro secretariat also listed eight other athletes and drum and bugle band members who reportedly collapsed due to the intense heat during the two-hour parade that started at around 1:30 p.m.

Len Toledo, chair of the Department of Education's Palaro secretariat, said they have long anticipated possible cases of heat stroke during the games due to the unusually intense temperature.

At least 50 heat stroke cases were recorded by Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao sports officials during last month's regional athletic meet in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

Toledo said they have deployed medical and DepEd teams of this city in key areas of the games' venues to address problems that may occur as a result of the searing temperature and other health concerns. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
