MANILA -- An eight-year-old boy and his 12-year-old friend were killed after a grenade they were playing with exploded in their central Philippine village, police said Thursday.

Four other youngsters, aged 9 to 11, were wounded in the blast on Wednesday and treated in a regional hospital, Senior Superintendent Balligi Tira said.

He said the eight-year-old found the grenade near his house in Buhi town in Camarines Sur province, 290 kilometers (180 miles) southeast of Manila.

It was not clear how it ended up in the village, but communist rebels operate in the area.(AP)
