Pangasinan mayor dies after ambush
MANILA (Updated) -- Mayor Julian Resuello of San Carlos City, Pangasinan, who was shot by still unidentified men during Saturday's coronation night in the city, passed away Monday morning.
Resuello, who was running for San Carlos vice mayor, passed away at 7 a.m. Monday while undergoing treatment at the St. Luke's Hospital in Quezon City. He succumbed to two gunshot wounds in the body.
The mayor was first brought to the Blessed Family General Doctors Hospital in San Carlos but was airlifted Sunday morning to the St. Lukes Hospital in Quezon City for thorough medical attention.
The mayor's son, Julier, incumbent vice mayor of the city and is running for mayor, claimed that the killing was politically motivated.
At least two men shot dead Mayor Resuello who was then hosting the Miss San Carlos City coronation night.
Resuello's civilian aide, Jojo Martinez, was also killed in the incident.
Ilocos Police Regional Director Leopoldo Bataoil has placed San Carlos City as an election "area of concern" following the killing of Mayor Resuello. He said they are considering politics as motive behind the murder but are looking into other angles.
A police report said the perpetrators pretended to be part of the crowd and worked their way to Mayor Resuello and his aides. The gunmen could have pointed their guns in between the bodies of unsuspecting people, Nerez said.
