United Opposition ‘likely to get accreditation’

MANILA -- The United Opposition (UNO) and not the Genuine Opposition (GO) will likely be declared as the dominant minority party, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. said Sunday.

The declaration determines which party gets a copy of election returns.

“Most probably it will be UNO,” said Abalos. He said they are now preparing a resolution recognizing the dominant majority and minority political parties.

He said UNO established that it has more affiliated parties, including deposed President Joseph Estrada’s Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP)-Laban, and Laban ng Demokratikonmg Pilipino (LDP).

According to Abalos, they already asked for UNO officers’ cooperation by “resolving among themselves” which should be accredited.

Comelec Law Department Director Alioden Dalaig, however, said they are having difficulty sorting out the affiliations of candidates and it is this reason why they were not able to submit their reports to the Comelec en banc.

Asked what these problems are Dalaig said, “The endorsement is full of (problems).”

He said there were even cases where candidates are endorsed not only by one party but by two or more parties. He said this makes their job more difficult.

But he assured officials they will be coming out with their recommendations on which to designate as dominant minority and majority parties.

Dalaig refused to give details on which among the administration parties will get the accreditation but he hinted that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) will likely to be declared the dominant majority. (MSN/Sunnex)
