Arroyo orders reassessment of Iraq repatriation plans (5:45 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Philippine president called for a quick reassessment of whether Filipino workers in Iraq need to be repatriated as she grieved Thursday over the killing of four Filipino contractors in a Baghdad rocket attack.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered diplomatic and labor officials to immediately bring home the bodies of the contractors, who had worked for the US government in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, her spokesman, Ignacio Bunye, said.

"The president is saddened at the news," Bunye said, adding that the Department of Foreign Affairs had been directed to conduct a quick reassessment of the situation to determine whether Filipino workers in Iraq need or want to be repatriated.

"The ban on travel to Iraq stands and our nationals are urged to take the necessary precautions for their safety while keeping in close touch with our embassy in Baghdad," he said.

The four contractors were killed in a rocket attack on the Green Zone on Wednesday, the American Embassy in Baghdad said. (AP)
