Honasan hits justice office for 'upgrading coup raps' (6:15 p.m.)

MANILA -- Senatorial candidate Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan on Friday criticized the Department of Justice (DOJ) for filing another amended case against him before a Makati court labeling him as one of the principal accused in the short-lived 2003 Oakwood mutiny.

Honasan said all he wanted was a "level legal playing field" and he will "subject himself to the rule of law and due process" regarding his case.

The former lawmaker made the comment after Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 148 Judge Oscar Pimentel granted his request for the additional time of 15 days to comment on the fourth amended information filed by the DOJ against him.

"Early this week I was informed by my legal counsel of the filing of the fourth amendment, which effectively added new charges against me. This is legally highly unusual and is unthinkable especially after the court has allowed me to post bail," said Honasan.

He labeled the filing of the "upgraded charges" as a form of persecution despite "my commitment to subject myself to the rule of law." (Sunnex)
