Local gov't chief defers Makati mayor's suspension
MANILA -- The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has decided to defer the suspension of Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay until after the election period.
Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, in a press release, said this was “in the interest of fair play.”

Puno said he will request the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to file the appropriate motion for the restudy of the order suspending Binay.
Last May 4, the Office of the Ombudsman ordered the preventive suspension of Binay, along with Makati City Treasurer Luz Yamane, for six months in connection with an administrative complaint filed against them for allegedly placing “ghost employees” on the City Government payroll.
Hearing
The anti-graft body also set the hearing of Binay’s case on Tuesday and directed DILG to immediately carry out the order against the mayor.
In compliance with the Ombudsman’s directive, Puno directed DILG Undersecretary for Public Safety Marius Corpus to carry out the suspension order on the evening of May 4 but Binay asked the DILG to defer the implementation of the order at least until Monday.
“In the interest of fair play, I have decided to defer the implementation of the order of preventive suspension against Mayor Jejomar Binay for the duration of the election period,” Puno said.
The complaint against Binay was filed by former Makati councilor Oscar Ibay for grave misconduct, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, and dishonesty in connection with the alleged ghost employees in City Hall. (Sunnex)
