Congress bet denies involvement in mayor's slay

PANGASINAN -- Congressional candidate Rachel Arenas said there is no truth to reports that she has something to do with the killing of San Carlos City Mayor Julian Resuello.

Text messages circulating in San Carlos pointed to Arenas, who was Resuello's party mate, as the one behind the murder.

The messages said Arenas was irked when the mayor took out her name from the sample ballots he distributed to voters in the city.

Arenas said she decided to speak up to clear her name. She called the allegations against her black propaganda. She asked the people not to believe in reports implicating her to the crime.

"I hope the people will not believe in these malicious text messages that are aimed at discrediting me. Mayor Jolly had been kind to me. Before he was shot, he called me about 10 times showing his concern for my victory," she said.

"Let us not insult the death of Mayor Jolly Resuello. I am his congresswoman and he fought for my candidacy in San Carlos City. The Resuellos are family to us, and I'm sure we are also to them," she said.

Resuello's son, new San Carlos Mayor Julier Resuello, said his father's killers should stop pointing at Arenas and any other people, adding that police investigation will determine who his father's murderers are.

He also denied that their sample ballots do not have the name of Arenas. He insisted that Arenas is their candidate for congresswoman.

Mayor Resuello was shot dead during a local beauty pageant at the city auditorium on April 28. Arenas and Julier were a few meters away from the mayor when the shooting happened.

Asked about the police investigation on his father's killing, Julier said: "Although I am happy with the way members of the Task Force Resuello are looking into the case of my father, I am not satisfied yet as others also responsible are still at large. We also want those who ordered to have my father killed brought to justice." (LCMY/Sunnex)
