Registered voters during the 2004 presidential elections in the region were placed a 2.134 million. Total registered voters in Mindanao during the past election were at 9.9 million.

In the 1998 presidential polls, 85 percent of voters cast their votes in the region. During the conduct of the 2001 mid-term polls, the turnout rate dropped to 74 percent.

Another drop was recorded in the 2004 presidential polls, with only 72 percent voter turning out to vote.

For Monday's polls, the NSCB is forecasting voter turnout of 73 percent or about 1.6 million voters.

Moreover, a report from the NSCB also revealed that the number of registered voters in the region increased by around 3.9 percent since 2004.

The highest increase in the number of registered voters was recorded in the province of Compostela Valley. Davao Del Norte only recorded a 0.7 percent increase in its number of registered voters.

Despite the increase in number of voters, the NSCB noted that voter turnout is continuously on the downward trend. The report said this downward trend started in the 1998 presidential elections. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
