Opposition in early lead in Namfrel-Davao tally By Nelson C. Bagaforo
* Popular actors fail to make it in winning circle -- Montano on 19th spot, Gomez on 26th
DAVAO CITY (Updated)-- Popularity, which used to be a major factor in winning an election in the country, seemed to have failed to work this time.
Popular actors who are running for senators are trailing far behind other candidates who are more experienced politicians.
In Davao City, actors Cesar Montano of Team Unity, and Richard Gomez, an independent candidate, failed to make it to the Magic 12 based on the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) partial unofficial count as of 1 p.m. Tuesday, covering 224 precincts.
The Genuine Opposition took an early lead in this city with eight of its senatorial candidates making it to the Magic 12. Only two of the administration's Team Unity and two independent candidates made it to the winning circle.
The two multi-awarded actors were trailing by a mile -- Montano on 19th spot and Gomez on 26th.
Montano tallied 4,072 votes while Gomez garnered 1,216 votes.
Surprisingly, two senatorial bets who are both facing charges for trying to overthrow the government, are doing well in Namfrel count.
Comebacking senator Gregorio Honasan, who is running as independent candidate and out on bail for rebellion charges, was on 8th spot with 8,244 votes, while Antonio Trillanes, of Genuine Opposition and facing the same charges, was 12th with 7,117 votes.
GO senatorial candidates occupied the top 5 positions in the winning circle with Francis Joseph G. Escudero leading the pack with 10,716 votes followed by Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino with 9,982 votes.
On third place was Panfilo Lacson, who garnered 9,856 votes while Loren Legarda, a consistent topnotcher in poll surveys, was fourth with 9,697 votes.
Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel, a Mindanaoan, was fifth with 8,901 votes.
Rounding up the Magic 12 were independent candidate Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan with 8,780 votes, Manuel Villar Jr. with 8,297 votes, Allan Peter Cayetano with 8,126, Juan Miguel Zubiri with 7,684, Joker Arroyo with 7,159 and Antonio Trillanes IV with 7,117.(Sun.Star Davao)
