Ilocos town mayor, councilor assassinated (9:49 a.m.)

MANILA -- A mayor and a councilor of municipality in Ilocos Norte was shot to death by an assassin during a town festival on Sunday night, a top police
official reported on Monday.

Ilocos Regional Police Director Leopoldo Bataoil said the suspect, whose identity remained unidentified, was slain by the mayor's security personnel after attacking the victims.

Bataoil identified the slain mayor and councilor as Philip Velasco and Marcelo Andaya.

Velasco ran in the recently-conducted elections under the banner of the Lakas-CMD party against Villamor Ramelb of the Liberal Party (LP) and Pacifico Velasco of the National People's Coalition (NPC).

Andaya also ran in the elections under the ticket of the slain Velasco. It was not however clear if the two slain candidates won or are leading in the canvassing of the votes. (VR)
