Comelec defers canvassing of Sulu votes (2:30 p.m.)

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) National Board of Canvassers has deferred the canvassing of votes from Sulu province after opposition lawyers noted the zero votes recorded for Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino Jr. and Allan Peter Cayetano.

Aquino and Cayetano both from the Genuine Opposition got zero votes from the town of Luuk.

Cayetano’s legal counsel Leila de Lima said the Certificates of Canvass appeared to be tampered after certain erasures were noted.

The Comelec en banc decided to defer the canvassing of Sulu votes to allow the lawyers to examine the statement of votes per precinct from the questioned province.

Meanwhile, the Comelec en banc sent lawyer Josephine de Misa to be the acting chairman of Shariff Kabunsuan board of canvassers and start the canvassing.

Commissioner Rene Sarmiento, in-charge of Maguindanao province since the canvassing of votes in Shariff Kabunsuan was delayed for security reasons.

Sarmiento will also be flying to Maguindanao on Thursday to oversee the special elections on Saturday in 13 towns in Maguindanao, two towns in Lanao del Norte and some barangays in Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-tawi.(Sunnex)
