CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- A leader of a fruit and vegetable vendors association was shot dead inside the public market in Agora, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City at past 10 p.m. Monday.

The victim, identified as Benjamin Dablio of Baluarte, Barangay Lumbia, was gunned down by a still unidentified assailant. Dablio's companion, known as Ray Cabilte, survived the shooting.

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown as of Tuesday. The victim's wife said her husband had no known enemies.

The 51-year-old Dablio served as president of the Agora Fruit and Vegetable Vendors' Association for over 10 years now.

His son Benjie said he heard reports that the cause of the attack might have something to do with the loading system in the marketplace.

This has yet to be confirmed, however.

The appearance of Dablio's assailant also cast suspicions on the nature of the attack.

According to reports from the Agora police precinct, the assailant wore a ski mask, camouflage pants, and a jacket, and rode on a black motorcycle.

The police said the assailant shot down Dablio 12 times in various parts of his body and some of these shots ricocheted and hit Cabilte, injuring him in the process.

The description raised suspicions of a vigilante-style killing, though it had yet to be known whether Dablio was affiliated with any other group. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro City/Sunnex)
