However, three of their companions, including Pena's driver Morin Merced and bodyguard Boy Gabini, were declared dead at the Riverside Medical Center.
The trio succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of their body, the medical report further revealed.
No one from the Pulupandan police could comment on the incident as of Wednesday. The town police chief cannot be reached on his mobile phone.
Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office Director Rosendo Franco, meanwhile, begged from commenting, saying he has just arrived from northern Negros and has not been briefed about the ambush.
The Negros Occidental town of Pulupandan, 31.1 kilometers south of Bacolod City, was declared an area of immediate concern during the May 14 elections due to the intense political rivalry between Pena and his rival, Samson "Sammy" Mondia.
Pena is a controversial figure in the town, especially after he threatened to bulldoze about 10,000 squatter families in three barangays.
On Monday, he took his oath of office before Governor Joseph Marañon at the Provincial Capitol. Asked about the squatters, he said he would relocate them to Moises Padilla, a mountainous town in central Negros. (Sun.Star Bacolod/Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Iloilo.
