2 Transco towers damaged in Lanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Two towers of the National Transmission Corp. (Transco) in the province of Lanao were damaged early dawn Friday, company officials said.

Transco spokesman Rufino Magbanua said in a radio station dxIF interview that the two towers were damaged in separate explosions but ruled out the possibility of bombings by rebel elements.

Magbanua added that their Transco teams are still verifying if the damage resulted from an act of sabotage by criminals or just accidents caused by overloading.

They said they have yet to verify if neighboring areas were affected by outages caused by the damaged towers.

Rebel groups, including the communist New People's Army (NPA), had been accused in the past of sabotaging Transco towers as part of ongoing offensives against the military.

The damages to the two Transco towers come even as the canvassing of votes by the Lanao del Norte Provincial Board of Canvassers on the three controversial ballot boxes resumed late afternoon Friday.

Lawyers for both local administration and opposition candidates argued over the validity of the ballot boxes coming from the towns of Kauswagan, Bacolod, and Maigo that were reportedly forcibly opened.

They were supposed to be delivered to the Lanao del Norte Capitol for canvassing but hundreds of supporters of reelected Vice Governor Irma Ali blocked the entrance to the Capitol building last Thursday.

Ali's supporters said they wanted to clear the official's name from allegations of involvement in the alleged tampering of ballots.

It has yet to be verified if the damages to the two Transco towers were related to the ongoing canvassing.

Transco officials also didn't give any timetable on the completion of repairs for the two towers. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
