4 soldiers slain in Compostela Valley clash

DAVAO CITY -- Four government troops were killed while eight others were wounded in a clash with communist rebels in Monkayo town in Compostela Valley early morning Thursday.

Brigadier General Carlos Holganza, chief of the Army's 101st Infantry Brigade based in the province, said the latest encounter happened in the hinterland barangay of Rizal.

He said Army soldiers, belonging to the 28th Infantry Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel Bienvenido Datuin, swooped down on the village where New People's Army rebels set up a camp at around 3 a.m.

The soldiers then engaged a band of some 80 rebels belonging to the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) in a four-hour gunfight that resulted in the death of the still unidentified Army soldiers. Eight other soldiers were also wounded.

Holganza said a number of NPA rebels were also killed or wounded based on traces of blood found on their escape route.

Holganza said slain soldiers were brought to a funeral parlor in Panabo City while those wounded were brought to a hospital in Tagum City for medication.

The rebels seized two M-14 and two M-16 rifles, a handheld radio, and radio communication equipment from soldiers.

The military is pursuing the rebels who fled in different directions towards the mountain areas of Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte. (Peng Aliño/Radyo ng Bayan)
