Fishkill hits Pangasinan town (8:40 p.m.)

PANGASINAN -- Anda Mayor Nestor Pulido said the fishkill in their town should serve as a sad and painful lesson to fish pen and fish cage operators who refused to stop the stocking of fingerlings.

The fishkill affected mostly fish pens and cages along the Caquiputan channel, particularly those in Barangays Mal-ong and Awag. About 200 fish pens and cages were hit by the fishkill.

Pulido said he has issued a moratorium on the stocking of fingerlings to the affected fish pens and cages for one month, but operators refused. He said overstocking of fingerlings in fish pens and cages and overfeeding are contributory to the pollution in the river that caused the fishkill.
