Special polls in 2 Basilan towns peaceful By Bong Garcia
ISABELA CITY -- There were no election-related incidents reported during the holding on Wednesday of special elections in two towns of Basilan.
Basilan provincial spokesman Christopher Puno said the polling precincts were heavily guarded by police and marine forces and this effectively prevented unscrupulous people from disrupting the conduct of the special polls.

Puno said some of the policemen served as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) since some teachers did not show up.
“Policemen and marines were posted in front and at the back of the polling precincts,” he said after visiting polling precincts in the newly created town of Akbar.
“Some of them were guiding the voters to fall in line in the precincts,” he added.
The special polls were conducted Wednesday in 11 precincts with 2,414 registered voters in the towns of Akbar and Sumisip where a failure of elections was declared last May 14.
Col. Ramiro Alivio, chief of the 1st Marine Brigade, said guns were fired some three kilometers away from the polling precincts in Akbar but this did not affect the polls.
Also, Alivio said the conduct of the special elections in Sumisip went on smoothly.
The special elections were conducted to determine the winning mayoral, vice mayoral, and councilor bets in the two towns. (Sunnex)
