Bus plunges into ravine, 30 injured, police say (8 p.m.)
MANILA -- A bus plunged into a shallow ravine after its brakes failed while the driver tried negotiating a winding road south of the capital Manila on Sunday, injuring all 30 passengers on board, police said.
The driver and conductor of the bus, which fell into the ravine in Ibaan township in Batangas province, about 100 kilometers south of Manila, were taken by police into custody for questioning, Ibaan police Chief Inspector Dionisio Faltado said.
None of the injured passengers, who were taken to hospitals in Ibaan and nearby Batangas city, were in serious condition, Faltado told The Associated Press by telephone.
Bus accidents occur frequently in the Philippines because of poor maintenance, lack of road hazard signs and railings and reckless drivers, some of whom use drugs to stay awake during long journeys. (AP) |
