Reports said policemen from the Kalinga Provincial Police Office and Provincial Mobile Group, augmented by elements of 21st Infantry Battalion, were tasked to secure the demolition in Malapiat in the village of San Pascual at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The demolition was conducted by the local government of Rizal in line with Resolution 2007-20, according to Emock. Emock did not say if the subject of the demolition was a colony of squatter shanties.
Emock said Ganipac and Nelmida were patrolling the area when they were fired upon by a group of armed men positioned in foxholes along the road leading to the demolition area.
"When the group of Inspector Guay went to verify the source of gunfire, they were also fired upon by the same group," said Emock. Guay and seven of his men were also wounded in the process, said Emock.
Emock said the armed men were asked to peacefully surrender but refused, prompting the policemen to engage them in a firefight.
Emock said the firefight lasted up to 5 p.m. and resulted in the killing of nine still unidentified men. The bodies of the men were brought to the Carbonel Funeral Parlor for identification and autopsy, he added.
At the crime scene, police recovered two M-16 rifles with defaced serial numbers, short ammunition magazines and 13 live bullets; a US Carbine with serial number 617245 with one magazine and three live ammo; 2 long homemade shotguns with 2 live ammos each; some short homemade shotgun; one hand grenade; and two empty shells for 12-gauge shotgun cartridges and one long cal. 22 rifle.

Cordillera Police Regional Director Raul Gonzales said they will file charges of multiple frustrated murder against the alleged suspects.
