Quake hits GenSan, causes panic (9:17 a.m.)
MANILA - A 4.6-magnitude earthquake jolted awake residents of General Santos City early Wednesday, causing walls to crack, but no serious damage or casualties were reported, officials said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the undersea quake was centered about 80 kilometers southwest of General Santos City, where local radio stations reported guests at a two-story hotel ran outside.
Many buildings in the city suffered cracks but no other damages were reported, radio reports said.
Government seismologist Erlinton Olavere said no aftershocks were recorded.
The Philippine archipelago lies in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanic activities are common.(AP) |
