CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Even if the disputed Maguindanao votes are canvassed, Genuine Opposition senatorial candidate Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III will still lead over Team Unity bet Juan Miguel Zubiri, a member of Pimentel's legal team said.

The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday heard Pimentel's petition to stop the canvassing of the controversial Maguindanao votes, which the opposition claimed as "spurious."

Team Unity candidates made a 12-0 sweep in the largely Muslim province, where local leaders said elections are decided through community consultations--from which favored candidates are overwhelmingly voted.

Lawyer Rogelio Bagabuyo, a member of Pimentel's legal bureau in Cagayan de Oro, admitted that once the SC allow the canvassing to push through, Zubiri will come out leading by around 17,000.

But Bagabuyo claimed Pimentel can easily erase that lead and emerge as the 12th senatorial winner once the votes in Biñan, Laguna are canvassed. (Danilo V. Adorador III/Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro)
