Arrest order issued vs Bedol

MANILA — A warrant for the arrest of fugitive Maguindanao Provincial Election Supervisor Lintang Bedol was issued Saturday by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The warrant was signed by Comelec Law Department Chief Alioden Dalaig, who ordered arresting officers to present Bedol on Monday to the Comelec central office for the canvassing of certificates of canvass (COCs).

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Police Regional Director Joel Goltiao said his office received a fax copy of Bedol’s warrant of arrest.

Bedol was cited in contempt by the Comelec en banc for failing to shed light on the disappearance of the municipal COCs of Maguindanao.

He was also charged with “infidelity in the custody of public documents” after he claimed that the copies submitted to him got lost.

The Comelec had ordered Bedol’s arrest after he did not appear again before the National Board of Canvassers to explain the loss of COCs of Maguindanao as well as alleged irregularities that marred the elections held in that province last May 12.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the warrant will be delivered personally by Comelec chief security Diosdado Sapu to Philippine National Police Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao Director Joel Goltiao in Maguindanao.

Jimenez also said he was informed that Bedol is in Manila but they are still verifying this report.

“I heard that he went to the Comelec office but I could not confirm this yet. Maybe it’s not true, I don’t know,” he said.

Comelec Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer, chairman of Task Force Maguindanao, earlier said they promulgated a resolution on Bedol’s arrest.

The four-page resolution specified the violations committed by Bedol, both criminal and administrative.

“We have put there his violations under the civil service law and if he is found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of termination from public office,” Ferrer said.

Aside from being terminated from his job, Ferrer said Bedol faces a six-month to six-year prison term if he is found criminally-liable. (MSN/Sunnex)
