By Dante M. Fabian

ANGELES CITY -- Two members of the Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) suffered gunshot wounds when they engaged in a gunfight three armed men who robbed a Swiss and his wife in the village of Balibago on Tuesday.

Senior Superintendent Sonny T. Cunanan, ACPO director, identified the wounded policemen as Senior Police Officer 2 Joel Mejiano and Police Officer 2 Manuel Tolentino, both of the Traffic Enforcement Group.

Mejiano was hit in the neck and is now in the hospital for surgery while a bullet grazed PO2 Manny Tolentino on his side.

Investigators led by Senior Inspector Alfredo Quiambao, Station 4 officer of the day, said the policemen were part of a road block put up to apprehend three men suspected of robbing Janice Garrigo Belger, 24, of White Beach Lodge, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, and her husband, 44-year-old Swiss national Guido Belger.

The Belger couple, who just stepped out of the Metrobank Branch with about P320,000, were walking towards Savers Mall when the incident happened.

As they walked in front of the Rural Bank of Angeles, two of the three suspects disembarked from a motorcycle and blocked the couple's way. They took Guido's bag containing P240,000 and Janice's bag, which had P80,000 and other valuables.

As the suspects fled, Mejiano and Tolentino reacted to a call for assistance and put up a blockade in front of the JEV Building in the city.

As the suspects neared the roadblock, Mejiano and Tolentino fired shots at the three who returned fire, hitting the two policemen and making good their escape.

Investigators recovered from the scene empty shells of a caliber 45. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
