Davao: Gabi boosts Donaire bid vs Darchinyan (8:40 p.m.)

DAVAO CITY –- Filipino challenger Nonito Donaire Jr. turned to Davao City fighter Diosdado Gabi for help in his bid to wrest the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization flyweight titles from Vic Darchinyan on July 7 (July 8 in Manila) in Connecticut.

Donaire, known as the "Filipino Flash who hails from General Santos City," has been sparring with Gabi at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles.

Gabi fought Darchinyan back in 2006 with the Filipino outboxing the champion in the early rounds before getting careless and was stopped in the eight round with a single punch. Gabi and Darchinyan are both left-handers.

Aside from Gabi, Donaire is also sparring with bigger guys like Ed Vargas. (Charles Raymond A. Maxey of Sun.Star Davao)
