Lumbia jailbreak kills 3, hurts 3 (9:05 p.m.)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- At least three inmates were killed and three fellow prisoners injured in a failed jailbreak attempt at the Lumbia City Jail in Barangay Lumbia, this city at past 4 p.m. Thursday.

According to radio reports, the inmates reportedly staged a mock fight to distract jail personnel during a scheduled inspection of prisoners, enabling some inmates to climb up a tower near the old Bureau of Jail Management (BJMP) building and effect their escape.

Later, Lumbia jail warden Alejandro Almazin said nine inmates belonging to the notorious Batang Mindanao 29 (BM 29) and Batman 357 gangs joined in the jailbreak with two of the inmates--one of whom was identified as Rolando Jaras, of Claveria town, Misamis Oriental--supposedly still roaming the hinterland Barangay of Pagulangan, this city.

The inmates involved in the jailbreak faced charges ranging from murder to kidnapping. (Stephen Capillas of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro)
