3 inmates killed, 3 others hurt in jailbreak
By Stephen Capillas

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Three inmates were killed and three others injured while escaping from the Lumbia City Jail in Barangay Lumbia at past 4 p.m. Thursday.

Lumbia jail warden Alejandro Almazin said the nine prisoners who joined the jailbreak belonged to the notorious Batang Mindanao 29 (BM 29) and Batman 357 gangs.

Operatives of the City Mobile Group (CMG) and Lumbia City Jail pursued and shot dead three of the fleeing inmates identified as Rudy Jumaynon, Crisanto Diomante, and Jerry Jumaynon.

The three were reportedly known as the "Claveria Boys" and were members of the so-called "Desperadong Magahat" cult group, which has Fernando Acosta as its leader.

The group is said to be responsible for the kidnapping of Vice Mayor Kho of Jasaan back in 2003.

Three other inmates were injured. Police identified them as Josue Sumilia, Ricky Jumaynon, and Rogelio Paraguya.

Paraguya, a Batman 357 gang member, was said to have seized an Armalite rifle from one of the jail guards during the jailbreak.

He was shot by pursuing Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel in the back and hands and was rushed for treatment to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC).

One other inmate, who remains unidentified as of Thursday afternoon, was captured while two others--one of whom was identified as Rolando Jaras of Claveria town, Misamis Oriental--have not been apprehended and are believed still hiding in the hinterland of Barangay Pagulangan.

Some inmates staged a mock fight to distract jail personnel during a scheduled inspection, allowing other prisoners to climb a tower near the old BJMP building and make good their escape, radio reports said.

The inmates involved in the jailbreak faced charges ranging from murder to kidnapping.

The escaping inmates supposedly climbed on top of the other and helped one another jump off the tower.

The inmates landed on some vegetation and used tires scattered around what used to be a cemetery behind the old BJMP building. Police found bloodstains in the grasses.

In 2005, about 50 inmates escaped from the Lumbia jail in what is considered the worst jailbreak in the country in modern times. The incident eventually resulted in the relief of several jail officials. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro City/Sunnex)
