Cops collar 2 escaped Lumbia jail inmates By Stephen Capillas
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Police and jail authorities recaptured Friday the remaining two of nine inmates who bolted from the Lumbia City Jail at past 4 p.m. Thursday.
Lumbia City Jail Warden Alejandro Almacen and Cagayan de Oro City Police Director Aurelio Trampe said inmate Arnold Acalan, a suspected Batang Mindanao 29 member, was captured at the hinterland of Barangay Tangpangi, here in Cagayan de Oro, at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Police authorities also arrested inmate Rolando Jaras of Claveria town, Misamis Oriental, after he and Acalan fled ahead of the gang of inmates that managed to use the tower near the old BJMP building to escape from the jail.
Police caught up with Jaras while he was resting in a grassy portion in Barangay Lumbia at past 4 p.m. Friday.
Jaras said he had planned to head to Bukidnon province and wait out the police manhunt before deciding where to go next.
He also admitted that the Lumbia jailbreak was planned in cahoots with "Desperadong Magahat" cult leader Fernando Acosta, who is detained at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail (MOPJ).
Jaras is said to be one of the so-called "Claveria Boys," the other being inmate Rudy "Lorgie" Jumaynon, who got killed while trying to escape from pursuing Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and City Mobile Group operatives.
Aside from Rudy, Crisanto Diomante and Jerry Jumaynon were also killed during the pursuit.
Security measures
Jail warden Almacen said Rudy died after misjudging the height of his jump, causing him to land hard in a pool of water along a grassy portion of the cemetery area located behind the old BJMP building.
The three--Rudy, Jerry, and Diomante--are reportedly members of the "Desperadong Magahat" cult group.
The group is said to be responsible for the kidnapping of Vice-Mayor Manuel Po of Jasaan town, Misamis Oriental back in 2003.
On the status of inmate Rogelio Paguya, not Paraguya as earlier reported, doctors at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center have yet to divulge his true condition. Reports said he has been hooked to a breathing machine after sustaining grievous gunshot wounds on his vital organs.
Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino Jaraula and Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno earlier called on jail officials in city and province to tighten security measures in order to prevent a repeat of last Thursday noon's incident.
"Jail officials should assume the worst case scenario and adopt the mindset that inmates will always attempt to make their escape," Jaraula said, adding he will talk with jail officials concerning the incident.
Governor Moreno said the Lumbia jail incident also mirrored similar escape attempts by provincial jail inmates in previous weeks, which were prevented by the MOPJ officials.
"There are plans to transfer the MOPJ from Cagayan de Oro to nearby towns like Villanueva and Jasaan in the province where it is accessible to the courts, but budget constraints have prevented us from doing this," Moreno said.
