Manila: Agency checks buses using compressed gas (6:30 p.m.)

MANILA -- The Department of Energy (DOE) has started inspecting buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) to ensure the smooth implementation of the Natural Gas Vehicles for Public Transport Pilot Project this month.

"While the CNG stations are already completed, we want to be sure that the buses are in good condition. The bus inspection is ongoing," Mario Marasigan, DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau director, told reporters as he announced the soon-to-be opening of CNG mother-daughter refilling station in Batangas owned by Pilipinas Shell.

The oil company invested US$7 million for the CNG station, which can accommodate about 200 buses.

Shell has already addressed its "technical and safety concerns" that caused the delay of the project for over a year, Marasigan said. He noted that the oil firm similarly resolved the concerns of bus operators concerning CNG bus loans. (Sunnex)
