Two small planes collide near Manila, 3 dead (4 p.m.)

MANILA -- Two small planes crashed in the middle of a rice field north of the Philippine capital on Sunday after their wings apparently grazed one another, killing three people on board, police said.

The two Philippine-registered aircraft crashed in a farming village in Malolos city in Bulacan province, police officer Gilberto Punzalan told The Associated Press by telephone.

Investigators could not immediately say if there were any survivors from the planes, which both took off from an airstrip in nearby Plaridel town, where flight training is held, Punzalan said.
