Cagayan de Oro: Execs to face raps for receipts mess (8:15 p.m.)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The City Finance Department in Cagayan de Oro warned barangay officials could face administrative cases if they continue to issue unofficial receipts, as City Mayor Constantino Jaraula said he already ordered an inquiry on the illegal practice.

City Treasurer Lino Daral said barangay officials--particularly treasurers—can also be stripped of their collection powers and could possibly face graft charges.

Daral also told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that a number of barangays had been caught by his office issuing illegal receipts.

"They (barangay officials) reason that they suddenly run out of official receipts, which they get from the City Treasurer's Office. But that's not a good excuse to break the law," Daral said.

The practice first came into light when several residents of Barangay Macasandig showed Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro a dossier of what appeared to be unofficial receipts commonly issued by the government's collecting agents. (Danilo V. Adorador III of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro)
