Probe on Basilan ambush set to begin (2:41 p.m.)

MANILA -- The government’s chief negotiator with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Rodolfo Garcia said the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) has yet to proceed to Basilan to start its Basilan probe.

Garcia said the members of the CCCH is on its way or have arrived in Zamboanga City and would eventually proceed to Basilan to start their inquiry involving the killing of 14 Philippines Marines.

“Part of their activities is to try to get into Basilan, the area concerned, and the focus of their attention is to conduct a fact finding mission on the beheading incident,” he said.

MILF members ambushed last July 10 a group of Marines on their way back to their camp after a fruitless search for then kidnapped Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi.

The Armed Forces has pushed through with its “selective” punitive actions after the MILF failed and continued to refuse to surrender its forces that were involved in the Basilan incident within the one-week period given by the military. The deadline lapsed Sunday.(JMR)
