Report: Tornadoes hit parts of Bangladesh, leaving 1 dead and several injured (6:15 p.m.)
DHAKA, Bangladesh -- Tornadoes swept across eastern and northern Bangladesh on Wednesday, killing a young boy, destroying homes and leaving several others injured, a news report said.
The storms lashed villages in three districts, causing hundreds of thatched homes to collapse, and uprooting trees and electric poles, the United News of Bangladesh agency reported.
The boy, 8, was crushed by a wall that collapsed in Noakhali district, 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of the capital, Dhaka, the report said. More than 50 homes were damaged and at least 13 people injured in the area, it said.
Abul Khayer, a local government official, was quoted as saying that at least six villages were battered by the tornadoes.
Another tornado hit five villages in Brahmanbaria district, 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Dhaka. At least 10 people were injured and more than 100 homes were damaged, the report said.
In the northern district of Jamalpur, three people were injured and more than 200 homes damaged when a tornado swept through the region, the report said.
