Davao: Padrino system, no-no in police recruitment (7:50 p.m.)

DAVAO CITY –- The "padrino sytem" in the Philippine National Police is now big taboo, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Southern Mindanao Director Andres Caro said amid the alleged involvement of young police officers in crimes like kidnapping.

Caro said they have strengthened their screening process in recruiting new cops by making sure that each new recruit has really gone through the process thoroughly and not just breezed through because they have prominent "backers."

"We are now avoiding accepting those who have backers. We want the new recruits to really pass through the examinations and not make it because of endorsements," Caro said.

Other than improving their recruitment process, Caro said they have also strengthened their counter-intelligence task force in looking for rogue cops. (Ben O. Tesiorna of Sun.Star Davao)
