Socioeconomic chief now heads Ched

MANILA –- The “lack of teamwork” between the heads of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) and the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda) led to the appointment of “presidential troubleshooter” Romulo Neri to Ched.

Presidential Management Staff head Cerge Remonde admitted Neri’s appointment Saturday, adding that Ched Chairman Carlito Puno will be transferred to a government-owned and controlled corporation.

“Neri is one of the President’s troubleshooters. There is a problem with the ladderized education scheme, and Ched Chairman Carlito Puno and Tesda Secretary-General Augusto Syjuco are not getting along too well),” Remonde said.

Remonde said Puno will be “transferred” to the United Coconut Chemicals Inc. (Cocochem).

Cocochem is a member of the CIIF Group of Companies, which the Presidential Commission on Good Government sequestered shortly after the first Edsa Revolution in 1986.

Neri earlier said he plans to “match” college graduates with job opportunities available in the market.

He said he received verbal orders to take over the Ched for at least six months.

Neri said he also plans to see how the Ched under him will improve the quality of education and improve its coordination with Tesda.

Neri is himself an education and had been teaching since the 70’s.

Under the present setup, he said many college students complain that the credits they earn in a vocational school supervised by Tesda are not credited when the transfer to a private college. (JMR/Sunnex)
