Senator nominated to international tribunal
MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday announced the nomination of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Arroyo made the announcement in her speech at the opening ceremony of the 40th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Ministerial Meeting (AMM) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

"Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, chairwoman of the committee on foreign relations and our Philippine nominee to the International Court of Justice," she said, in acknowledging Santiago's presence in the event.
Santiago was also a contender for chief justice of the Supreme Court (SC) last year but she failed to make it.
The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the UN that was established in 1945, settles legal disputes submitted to it by UN member states and gives opinions on legal questions submitted to it by duly authorized international organs and agencies.
The ICJ is composed of 15 judges, who are elected by the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council from a list of nominees to serve for nine years.
Asia is entitled to a seat in the ICJ once Jordan's term expires in 2009.
If Defensor makes it, she will be the second Filipino in the ICJ, after Chief Justice Cesar Bengzon, who served in the ICJ from 1967 to 1976. (JMR/Sunnex)
