P1 million reward out on mayor's killer

LINGAYEN -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday raised to P1 million the reward for anyone who could provide information that would lead to the arrest of the suspect in the killing of San Carlos City mayor Julian Resuello last April 28.

Police identified Resuello's gunman as Cesar "Kabesa" de Guzman.

Pangasinan Police Provincial Director Isagani Nerez said the President increased the reward after a meeting with Resuello's eldest son, incumbent San Carlos City Mayor Julier Resuello, and other Pangasinan local officials in Rosales town on Wednesday.

"The increase of the reward would expedite the arrest of Kabesa (de Guzman)," said Nerez.

Police said de Guzman and Angelito Soriano shot (Julian) Resuello repeatedly while he was shaking hands with the people at the city plaza.

He died while undergoing treatment at the St. Luke's Hospital in Quezon City. His civilian bodyguard also died in the incident.

De Guzman went into hiding after the incident while Soriano was arrested in a hospital in San Carlos City where he was confined for a gunshot wound in the leg.

The mayor's policeman-escort, whom Soriano engaged in a shootout, identified him as one of the two gunmen.

During Resuello's wake, concerned citizens offered a P300,000 reward for the capture of de Guzman. House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. shelled out another P200,000. Arroyo on Friday added P500,000 to increase the amount to P1 million.

Arroyo led local officials during Wednesday's inauguration of the Carmen-Rosales Central Transport Terminal in Rosales, Pangasinan. (LCMY/Sunnex)
