Pinoys give poor ratings to Arroyo in fight v. corruption (3:45 p.m.)
SEVEN out of 10 Filipinos have given President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo a failing mark for her anti-corruption efforts, Ibon’s July survey showed.
The survey, which had 1,488 respondents, revealed that 71.03 percent or 1,057 gave the President a failing grade when asked to rank her performance in fighting corruption.
Only 7.74 percent gave Arroyo an above passing grade while 15.52 percent gave her passing marks.
Arroyo’s grade is higher than the 61.22 percent that she received in January 2007 but slightly lower than the 72.7 percent that she got in July last year.
In the Pulse Asia survey, the Arroyo administration obtained negative net approval ratings in six of 12 national issues. These are in: reducing the poverty of many Filipinos, -21; controlling inflation, -20; eradicating graft and corruption in government, -18; eradicating political killings, -13; restoring the people’s trust in government and its officials, -10; and increasing the pay of workers, -9.
But government got positive net scores on: encouraging new investments to get more jobs, 19; economic recovery, 9; increasing peace in the country, 8; curbing widespread criminality, 8; providing access to affordable and dependable electric power, 7; and stopping environmental abuse and destruction, 7.
