‘No reason’ to replace justice chief

MANILA -- Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. is "still strong" and won't be replaced in the Cabinet, Malacañang said Sunday.

Gonzalez was hospitalized Friday night for bleeding ulcer and kidney failure.

Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo said there is "no reason" to replace Gonzalez.

Saludo said Gonzalez was "very active" during the Cabinet meeting last July 31, when the sale of the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City was discussed. He said the justice secretary also attended the National Security Meeting on August 2.

"He (Gonzalez) was fine," he said.

Gonzalez, whose kidney problem requires him to undergo regular dialysis, is reportedly in the intensive care unit of the Polymedic Hospital.

Another Cabinet member -- Presidential political adviser Gabriel Claudio -- will undergo a spinal surgery on Monday for scoliosis and compressed nerves. He will go on leave after the procedure.

Claudio underwent his first spinal surgery to correct his congenital scoliosis in the late 1970s.

"My lower back pains have become severe. In politics, you really have to watch your BACK," he said in a text message last week.

Aside from Claudio, several Cabinet officials under the Arroyo administration have also undergone treatment such as Finance Secretary Margarito Teves for pancreatitis and Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye for a slipped disc.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales have also been advised by their doctors to monitor their blood sugar and cholesterol levels, while First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo continues to receive therapy after undergoing a triple heart bypass in April.
