Teachers’ group says cyber education ‘a waste of gov’t funds’ (4:23 p.m.)
THE militant Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has called on the government to scrap the Department of Education (DepEd) program called "cyber education" saying it is a “waste of government funds while providing little benefit to students."
ACT chairperson Antonio Tińio said the project aims to set up television production and satellite broadcasting facilities in the Deped's central office and satellite-based facilities in 26,618 schools throughout the country.
Under the project, fifteen to twenty minute-classes taught by "excellent master teachers" in all subjects for all year levels will be broadcast live via satellite to all the schools on the system's 12 television channels.
ACT said that the project fails to address the roots of the problems in basic education with the use of expensive technology. Further, the project lacks transparency.
The project will be rolled out over a three-year period and funded by a loan from China worth US$465.5 million or P26.48 billion. (AH/Sunnex) |
